Winery Tasting Notes

Colour - Dark Red/Black

Bouquet - Inviting and complex aromatics welcome you into this wine; brambly, leafy notes backed up by deep dark fruit with subtle spice and char interplay on the nose. There is a deceptive density to this wine’s aroma that hints at what lies beyond….

Palate - We think we ‘cracked it’ in 2015 with the inaugural London Calling Cabernet Malbec (by finally getting the boss to let us throw a decent whack of beautiful Malbec plushness in with our structured and at times ‘shy’ Cabernet Sauvignon).

Generous, accessible primary fruit sits pretty up front but let the wine breathe and suddenly these dry, fine and lightly chewy tannins build on the back palate, lending a savoury edge to the dark fruit finish of this baby.

General - We need to let you in on a little secret…this year, for the first the first time we waved a skerrick of ‘Magic Merlot’ over this blend. We have a passionate and determined grower who produces an amazing parcel of merlot grapes from a block adjacent the cellar door. This parcel then sits in the barrel store (old oak) and when used as a finishing aid to almost any red wine seems to pull everything together in a very special kind of way. It contributes structure, softness and acts as a cohesive, cunning negotiator to unite disparate forces into a seamless finished wine….1 – 2% at most the magic of Merlot strikes again!

Winery Profile

Claymore Wines, situated in the beautiful Clare Valley in South Australia, began in 1997 with small volumes of Grenache and Riesling, and has now grown to almost 15,000 cases per year across a highly awarded range of wines.

We draw fruit from our five premium estate owned vineyards at Penwortham (the backbone of our red wine production) and Watervale (home to our Joshua Tree vineyard). These sites have been specifically chosen for their suitability for our staple varieties – Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our labelling is inspired by some of the great music of modern time - from rock, punk and folk. Our wines are about bringing together great passions to create the ultimate experience. We pride ourselves on meticulous winemaking using only the best fruit, but when it comes to enjoying a glass we don't take ourselves too seriously! So turn up the volume on a soundtrack of your choice, crack a bottle with friends, and relax.
