Wine Summary Image

Vineyard - Pinot Grigio is harvested with the Estate Grown Arneis planted by Deen and Kevin De Bortoli back in 2000. The Vermentino is off the De Bortoli Moyhu vineyard located in the King Valley planted back in 2010.

Season - A record wet start to Winter and Spring gave soil moisture a good head start to the ripening/growing season. The increased cloud cover kept us below average in the solar radiation stakes, which made for a long ripening period. Three week later start then usual and not finishing harvest until after Easter. The Summer was dry and warm keeping disease pressure at bay.

Winemaking - 3 Italian varieties planted by the De Bortoli family were harvested together on the same day and into the same tank. Blend of Pinot Grigio, Arneis & Vermentino. The fruit of these 3 varieties were pressed together and the juice allowed to settle for 1 day before racking to fermentation. Fermentation lasted 9 days and the resulting wine left in this tank on lees for 9 months to let the aroma's and textures come together. The wine is suitable for vegans.

Expert Reviews

Here's another offbeat blend, in this case from the Italian-origin pinot gris and arneis varieties. Arneis is best known in the Piedmont area of north-west Italy and is now more extensively planted in Australian vineyards. Pinot gris is native to northern Italy. This aromatic white is green-tinted straw and has orange blossom scents and spicy gooseberry front-palate flavour. The middle palate features pear, apple peel and gunmetal characters and the finish has slatey acid. 4 stars. - John Lewis Newcastle Herald March 2018

"A touch of Vermentino thrown into the mix, but not enough to make it to the front label. Light touches of nougat on the nose, some pear and lime with white frangipani. Pear mineral and some lightly salty/briny notes in there, which will make this work extremely well with seafood." J Foley Weekend Post June 2017

"This blend of two Italian varieties (with a touch of vermentino added to make it a fun trio) is crisp and clean and quite dangerously easy to drink. It's worth buying a dozen to have around the house just because. This is unoaked, vegan-friendly and terrific for just? $12." Winsor Dobbin Wine of the Week April 2017

"Blended from Pinot Grigio, Arneis and a touch of Vermentino. Dry textural, briny, gentle aromatics, a little grip, crying out for some soft shell crab. Drinks Trade Magazine April 2017

"This pinot grigio-arneis pours light gold, shows aromatic jasmine aromas and brings lifted gooseberry flavour to the front of the palate. Pear, mineral and mixed peel characters chime in on the middle palate and lemony acid refreshed at the finish."Newcastle Herald March 2017

Winery Profile

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo.

Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 – d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wine including icon dessert wine Noble One and the Yarra Valley wines.

Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values, there is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends.
