Wine Summary Image

2017 was a long and relatively cool one on the Mornington Peninsula. Cold and wet weather around flowering and fruit set has delivered large variation throughout the region in terms of quality and quantity. Being in a warmer part of the region we ripened our fruit in near perfect condition. Harvest date was later relative to the long term average with a below average crop load. In summary the season has produced good flavour ripeness at lower sugars with bright and intense fruit flavours, nice structure and good acid balance.

Tod Dexter knows a thing or two about Chardonnay (and Thunderbirds, as an aside). In his email asking if we’re up for reviewing the 2017s, he simply says “I think they’re OK.” Well, I do too, and the wines, of course, speak for themselves. We don’t need hyperbolic press releases…

Flavour delivered with finesse, is the import. A light smokiness, spice, lime rind and nectarine, but hey, it’s Chardonnay all right, and that’s the main thing. Slightly nervy too, subtle green reflections in the just-ripe fruit, almost a Riesling like cut of lime and crushed rock, tang and energy through the finish. Sophisticated. A little bit of something extra here.

Winery Tasting Notes

Nose

Aromas of citrus fruits, particularly grapefruit and lemon and nectarine with subtle oak.

Palate

Similar to previous vintages in its elegance and fineness after a near perfect 2017 vintage. Subtle flavours reflective of the aromas – particularly lemon, grapefruit, stone fruit and elegant oak. The wine has a soft middle palate with good length and a nice acid balance. Similar in structure to the 2016 vintage but perhaps more linear.

Winery Profile

Tod Dexter grew up with wine. Along with his parents' considerable interest in wine he had a childhood friendship with the Crittendon family, one of Melbourne's premium wine merchants who further introduced him to the world of wine. It was then no surprise that in 1974 after a skiing trip in the US, Tod ended up in the Napa Valley where he spent a seven-year apprenticeship with one of California's premium family wineries, Cakebread Cellars.

Tod moved home to Australia in January 1987, and after an extensive search he and his wife Debbie bought a vineyard site at Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula. Later that year they planted their first 1.6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Tod then joined forces with Brian Stonier at Stonier Wines where, over the next ten years, he grew the company to become one of Australia's premium producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. During this decade the wines Tod created received many accolades both at home and internationally.

During a formative trip to France in 2000 when they visited the most famous Pinot producers in the world, Tod gained a new respect for the concept of terroir and the responsibility to future generations in caring for the land. He also had reinforced to him the importance of attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery. This trip was what encouraged Tod and Debbie to take the next step and produce their own wine. Thus Dexter Wines was born.
