Wine Summary Image

Sourced from a small selection of our favourite shiraz blocks, the grapes were both hand and machine picked before fermentation in the traditional open top vats. The wine was then matured in older, large format French oak casks. These 2,700 litre casks highlight the fruit purity whilst making sure that oak isn’t the dominant character.

Expert Reviews

Gold & 96 Points - James Halliday, Published 01 August, 2019

A brother to the '18 Hunter Valley Semillon, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, pressed to large-format used casks. This is a rich yet tightly managed wine, placing all the emphasis on fruit fruit, precisely that which should be done, especially in a year such as this. If you buy it now - and you should - put not less than 50% in the cellar, and have a glass on me, recalling it only cost $25. Gold medal Hunter Valley Wine Show.

Winery Tasting Notes

Vineyard

A selection of some of our top blocks, most of which are dry grown and averaging 40 years in vine age.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season started with great promise with our wettest winter in nearly a decade. Perfect conditions for budburst and flowering were followed by an unsettled summer consisting of hot days and wild storms. Luckily these weather patterns calmed down into one of the driest February’s on record.

Winemaker’s Notes

Fermented in traditional hand plunged open vats and then matured in 4 year and older (2600L) French oak barrels. These French ‘Foudre’ casks serve to lift and freshen the fruit on the nose and palate rather than add any obvious characters of new wood. This wine is developed with a simple winemaking philosophy; choose the best fruit we can and gently encourage the savoury red fruit and soft tannins that the Hunter is famous for to shine through.

Tasting Notes

A classic medium-bodied Hunter style. Deceptively ‘rich’ with a savoury pepper and charcuterie flavour mixed in good proportions with ripe red and black berry fruits. Solid colour and intensity start the wine off in the right direction, while the palate shows up-front

fruit sweetness with our hallmark savoury crunchy tannins and fresh moreish finish. Vintage conditions resulted in a combination of really ripe fruit flavours balanced by the leaner savoury ones, making this wine not only very drinkable but also adding some intrigue.
