Expert Reviews

93 Points James Halliday Wine Companion 2016

Sweet red berried fruit, yes, but much more than that. This is a wine with the ability to pick its moments. It's elegant for the most part, start and finish, but when it's time to go, it pours on the boysenberried, earthen, spice-shot spearmint flavours, ushering fine-grained, smoky tannin along with them.

91 Points Josh Raynolds

Vibrant ruby-red. Energetic, highly perfumed, nose displays fresh raspberry, lavender and peppery spice scents plus a hint of mocha. Smooth and juicy on the palate, offering appealing sweet red and dark berry flavors and a touch of spicecake, with the floral note reappearing as the wine opens up. In a seamless, fruit-driven style, with excellent closing focus and supple tannins building steadily and adding shape.

91 Points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Bursts of liquorice, cola and redcurrant will keep most drinkers happy. This puts runs on the board quickly and keeps the scoreboard ticking over throughout. It pours the flavours on, soft and delicious for the most part but with earthen, coffeed tannin keeping the finish neat.

92 Points James Suckling & Nick Stock jamessuckling.com

Red berries follow through to darker fruits. There's a lot to like on the palate. Really openhearted and open-knit. The structure is there to support the fruit. Drink now to 2022.

92 Points Jeremy Oliver

A soft, smooth Burgundy styled grenache whose slightly meaty, creamy and earthy aromas of blueberries, blood plums and nutmeg reveal a hint quince. Packed with fruit, it's gentle and luscious, long and complete, with a charming length of fruit underpinned by soft, plaint tannins, finishing with a lingering meatiness.

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson tints.

Nose

Lifted aromas of black cherries, rose petal and dark cocoa come together, finely complemented by hints of subtle oak spices.

Palate

Beautifully balanced and textural in structure, the seductive flavours of dark cherries, rich chocolate, sweet kirsch and spicy French oak seamlessly combine with the polished tannins and fine bodied acidity that Grenache is renowned for.

Cellaring: Potential of at least 10 - 12 years with careful cellaring

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
