Wine Summary Image

Low yielding fruit from two vineyards, one positioned in the warmer Leasingham district and the other at our cellar door in the cooler, more elevated Skillogalee valley.

A classic Clare Valley vintage that featured warm days and cooler night temperatures, slowing down the harvest allowing both vineyards to be hand picked at their optimum levels of ripeness and maximising the development of the cassis and tobacco leaf characters, fine tannins and balanced natural acidity.

Once the hand picked fruit arrived at the winery, it was gently crushed and fermented on skins until dryness using selected, cultured yeasts. Once dry, each batch was basket pressed into a selection of new and 1 year old French oak hogsheads and allowed to mature for 18 months in our cellars. Final composition and bottling occurred without fining or filtration. This is the finest Cabernet in our portfolio with less than 3000 bottles produced.

Expert Reviews

Rating 96 James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2018

Only produced in the best vintages is one of the most hackneyed mistruths (yes, Donald) in the game, but it's true here, sourced from the estate property at Penwortham, production less than 300 dozen of what is Kilikanoon's finest cabernet. The colour looks as if it were bottled yesterday, and the river of cassis flowing between the headlands of tannin is equally youthful.

93 Points James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com 2018

This has an impressive concentration and depth, speaking to the suitability of this variety in Clare Valley. Still fresh with plenty of leaves and herbs, as well as cassis and dark plums. The palate has long, structured fruit presence with handy tannin drive. Drink or hold.

91 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 2017

Deep garnet colored, the 2013 Tregea Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is intensely scented of fruits of the forest coulis, blueberry preserves and dried plums with hints of blackcurrant cordial, cedar box, dried Mediterranean herbs and menthol. Medium-bodied, it packs an abundance of baked berry and spice box flavors into a relatively elegant package with grainy tannins supporting a persistent, lively finish.

Winery Tasting Notes

Nose

Fresh red berries, riper blackcurrent notes, hints of leaf and mint all meld seamlessly together, seductively supported classy French oak spices.

A textured yet taut and linear palate, the noble flavours of cassis, tobacco leaf, nuances of liquorice and lively red berries all superbly combine, further enhanced and fleshed out by the wines lively acidity and fine grained tannins; a Reserve wine made for the ages.

Cellaring Potential of at least 15 years

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
