STYLE

Angela is a slightly different expression of Shiraz which is sourced from Sandra’s block, located about 5km south of the Chinese Block we use for our G.A.M. Shiraz. We have always used grapes from Sandra’s block as a blending component in our Jester Shiraz but as this vineyard has matured, it has shown its potential to stand alone as a single vineyard wine. I have always loved the slightly brighter fruit profile and complete structure that we get from Sandra’s block. It has the ideal power and weight to sit between our Jester Shiraz and premium G.A.M. Shiraz. Angela is lifted with pure, ripe berry flavours at the forefront and subtle oak, allowing the fruit flavours to shine.

VINEYARD

We source the Shiraz fruit for this wine from Sandra’s block, located at the southern end of McLaren Vale near

the seaside town of Willunga. The soil and geology of this block differ slightly to Chinese Block, with less black Biscay clay and more alluvial Christies Beach formation. This soil type contains rocky fragments that have been sheared off the nearby hills and deposited in this soil millions of years ago. It is free draining, resulting in less vigour over spring and more content vines in the ripening period. This leads to a bright and uplifted wine style whilst retaining signature Mitolo Shiraz softness.

VINIFICATION

The 2013 vintage in McLaren Vale was a good one with excellent winter rains and mild, dry conditions ideal

for grape ripening. Shiraz for Angela is destemmed and crushed gently then pumped over once daily for around

ten days. The ferment was kept cool throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very

softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters that are a signature for Mitolo. The wine was kept in a combination of new (~10%) and one and two year old barrels, mainly of French origin, for 18 months before being blended. The final blend is clarified by racking only, and bottled without fining or filtration.

Expert Reviews

Destemmed and crushed, matured in mainly French oak (10% new, 90% 1 and 2yo) for 18 months. Very well made, speaking with equal clarity of its region and variety; plum and black cherry fruits slide fluidly across the palate, oak a measured companion. - James Halliday

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

When the Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950s they brought their viticulturist ancestry and an ethos belonging to the Abruzzo region - forte e gentile or strong and gentle. The family worked hard to become successful market gardeners while staying true to their origins where food and wine, family and friends, laughter and celebration were an integral part of life.

After years of working in his family’s potato business, Frank Mitolo started making wine for family and friends.

In 1999, after a now legendary 5 hour discussion with winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the pair fashioned a dream of making the ultimate expression of McLaren Vale’s rich provenance of soils. They jotted a six word business plan on the back of a napkin: individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power.

The first Mitolo wine, the 2000 G.A.M. Shiraz was named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alex and Marco. Since then Mitolo have added another 16 wines to the range each with its own distinct personality and story.

The winery works closely with its growers, the Loprestis. The Loprestis, also Italian immigrants and old friends of the Mitolos, have an affinity with their land, producing fruit of the highest quality. The fruit is the essence of Mitolo, with a depth of flavour garnered from heavy clay soils, yet freshness thanks to the gentle afternoon sea breeze. In the winery, Ben takes a ‘hands-off’ approach, fermenting cool to retain purity, and using a range of barrel coopers to generate complexity yet respect and enhance the fruit.

The Mitolo Italian heritage runs strongly through the range using the Italian varieties and techniques. Business meetings are still held over Sunday lunch with traditional Italian food and of course Mitolo wine shared with friends, old and new. And at the heart of it all, in the wine style, in the people, is the motto that the Mitolos brought from Abruzzo - forte a gentile: strong and gentle.
