Wine Summary Image

In her 26th vintage, owner / winemaker Stephanie Toole has produced a beautiful and utterly delicious riesling entirely from fruit grown at her Watervale vineyard.

“2019 was a dream run: a low-stress vintage with the fruit ripening evenly following dry seasonal conditions. All very positive except for the lowish yield, which means our 2019’s will sell quickly.”

The remote, isolated Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling vineyard is in the north-eastern corner of this famous Clare Valley subregion, planted on the very edge of the highly prized red loam over limestone. This ACO (Australian Certified Organic) vineyard produces beautifully balanced organic fruit, allowing Stephanie to make her wine without acid additions or the need for fining. The Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling is not only vegan and vegetarian friendly (as are all her wines), it also has ageing potential, while drinking beautifully now.

James Halliday

95 Points

This offers the commodity in short supply in '19: finesse. Or, if you prefer, elegance. It has all the varietal flavours that make riesling what it is - mouthwatering, vibrant, crisp and long - riding high on a magic carpet.

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Youthful lime green which will develop in time.

Palate

Crunchy green-apple crisp, vibrant distinctive lemon-lime citrus flavours abound, at once juicy and tangy. Almost ethereally light and elegant, its minerality wafting along the palate to a long, pleasing close.

Winery Profile

Mount Horrocks Wines is operated by proprietor / winemaker Stephanie Toole, who restricts production to approximately 4,500 cases per annum to achieve her aims of quality and single vineyard expression. With an emphasis on sustainable natural farming and organic practices, Mount Horrocks Wines has vineyards at three sites totalling 10 hectares in the Clare Valley.

Stephanie carefully crafts her wines, which she describes as “essentially hand made food wines with emphasis on structure as well as generous fruit flavours”. All grapes are hand picked, and only the finest French oak is used for those wines spending time in barrel.

The name of the subregion where this riesling is grown is Watervale, and perhaps that’s why I find it so mouthwatering upon each sip of every new vintage – the power of suggestion. Or maybe it’s because the vines planted in perfect red-soil-over-limestone terroir, are grown organically, and in 2019 yielded small crops of grapes that were meticulously handled by winemaker Stephanie Toole. Either way, this wine is deeply moreish: perfumed, lime juicy, intense, mineral, driven.
