Expert Reviews

"This isn't as good as the '14, but is much better than the Philips of 10 or 20 years ago. It is clearly varietal, and clearly Hunter. It's medium-bodied, with a quite fleshy mid-palate, earthy/savoury notes arriving on the finish along with the tannins. As honest as they come, and will surprise and delight those who cellar it for 10 years." - Rating 93 - James Halliday Wine Companion 2018

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour - Deep purple.

Aroma - Fresh red and black berries coupled with spice and hints of blue fruits.

Palate - An intense palate of fresh fruits with a beautifully fine tannin structure. Classically medium bodied, exhibiting true Hunter regionality with its perfectly balanced acidity and impeccable length.

Growing Conditions - A tough vintage for certain areas of the valley. Rainfall was high, typical of what the Hunter can deliver, but the amazing ability of the vines to withstand these rain events truly astounds. The lead up to harvest was great, cool conditions, dry and lovely fruit set led to great crops at an average yield. The rainfall throughout vintage tested winemakers, with careful selective picking required to ensure the highest quality was achieved.

Vinification/Maturation - Crushed into a combination of open top and static fermenters. Following a gentle 3 day pre-fermentation cold soak the wines were inoculated with cultured yeast. Colour & tannin were extracted from the skins by a combination of plunging and pumping-over for a period of up to 10 days. After pressing, the wines were transferred to a combination of stainless steel, to give freshness, and oak barrels, (10% new) to give richness & complexity, for a maturation period of 12 months. Once optimum maturation was obtained the parcels were blended and prepared for bottling.

Peak Drinking - Built to drink as a young wine or will cellar gracefully over the short to medium term

Winery Profile

McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant, home to the Old Hill Vineyard planted in 1880, is one of Australia’s most treasured vineyard sites.

The Estate was established in 1921 by the legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea who also coined the property’s name – a name which would go on to grace his wine labels. O’Shea brought sophisticated blending and oak treatment techniques to his winemaking and his unique and inspired wines drew praise for their intensity of flavour and significant longevity.

In 1941, the McWilliam family acquired ownership of the Mount Pleasant winery. Holding a special talent for recognising the unique characteristics and longevity of Hunter Valley table wines, Chief Winemaker Maurice O’Shea was encouraged to pursue his creations.

There have been only three Chief Winemakers at Mount Pleasant since 1921, ensuring the winery’s consistency in wine style and quality. Current Chief Winemaker Phil Ryan joined McWilliam’s in 1965 at the age of 19 and his extensive contribution to the New South Wales wine industry was recognised when he was awarded the prestigious Graham Gregory Trophy.

The Mount Pleasant range draws from more than 90 years of vintage experience to deliver varietal classics and is today recognised for its powerful Hunter Valley Shiraz and dedication to creating benchmark Hunter Valley Semillon.Located just two hours North of Sydney, McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant creates some of Australia’s most celebrated and awarded wine styles.
