Wine Summary Image

The 2015 vintage started with the wettest spring experienced in recent history and mild temperatures meant a later than usual flowering and start to the growing season. Strong vine growth eventuated and canopy management was key to successful wines, with both fruit and leaf removal required. It was a perfect year for the plucking sheep to go back into the vineyard in January. From here a warm, dry late summer and autumn

meant grapes could hang on the vine until perfectly ripe.

Expert Reviews

93 points, Ray Jordan’s 2019 WA Wine GuideElegance and poise are clearly demonstrated in this excellent cabernet sauvignon. Leafy blackcurrant and black olive aromatics with a little graphite influence. The palate is more in the medium bodied zone and yet there is still tremendous depth of fruit, with sinewy tannins and perfectly weighted fine-grained oak. A classy and polished cabernet.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon displays the characteristics so typical of Wilagri vineyard, with highly aromatic ripe mulberry and cassis aromas. On the palate the vibrant, crisp redcurrant and blackberry flavours are seamlessly wrapped in the fine, tight tannins with added complexity and body from lightly toasted French oak, well integrated from extended barrel maturation.

The fine, firm structural tannins give the 2015 the ability to reward extended ageing over 10 years, where the wine will begin to show the complex secondary tobacco and cedar notes of aged Cabernet Sauvignon. For serving over the next 3-5 years a match with slow cooked game or meat dishes would work well, with the

crisp redcurrant flavours and fine tannins acting a foil for the richness of the dish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Oates Ends was born in 2000 when the family made a red blend in the shed on the farm to share with friends and family. The grapes used came from the ends of the rows that the machine harvester didn't pick, hence the name.  Picked from various blocks and vareties around the region and added to the ferment until sufficient volume for a barrel or two, each vintage blend was unique.

Fast forward more than a decade and winemaker Cath decided it was time to make wines to capture the evident quality of the vineyard that the family planted in 1999 and Oates Ends was reborn.

Drawing on the combined experience of their respective careers with wine and vineyards, a shared love of wine and a healthy dose of sibling rivraly, Oates Ends is a relection of their individual philosophies, from a great piece of earth in a very special part of the world.

arming is in the blood of the Oates family, with Cath and Russ both growing up on the various family farms in the Margaret River region.

Cath decided to study winemaking at Roseworthy and went on to make wine in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and the USA, including heading up the iconic wines of Mud House in New Zealand and Plantagenet Wines in Western Australia.  Winning multiple awards and recognition for her wines over the last two decades then returning to Margaret River to focus on making Oates Ends is the fulfillment of a long held dream.

Russ became involved in vineyards after a stint working with a local vineyard contractor in the 1990's.  He soon decided to go out on his own and started his successful vineyard management business, looking after some of Margaret River's best premium vineyards.  All of this knowledge has been put into Wilagri vineyard, supplying fruit to some top Cabernet producers in the region and now capturing it in the Oates Ends wines.

Stu and Sue have been farming the area since they met and married in 1966.  Stuart comes from many generations of South West farming stock.  Sue was a city girl but soon learnt to draft a sheep with the best of them.  Stuart is the jack of all trades, sometimes helping out in the vineyard or with the cellar work, always on the land somewhere if the sun is up.
