No one’s going to feel short-changed by this release. It swings with flavour. Not overdone and not anti-varietal flavour, but it sure has a force to it. It’s twittery with it. Like a colt without regrets. Boysenberry, blackcurrant, mulberry and smoky cigars. Dust. Rust. Crust of the earth. A cool slide of mint. Fresh cedary oak. It all works as one; it all pulls in the same direction. As one. It’s perfumed and pretty now but has plenty up its velvety sleeve for the future. 94/100. WINEFRONT

Appearance

Bright ruby.

Aroma

Intense cassis and dried floral.

Palate

Resolved tannins frame a dense vibrant core of berry fruit, hints of fresh tobacco and subtle earthy undertones. A very approachable youthful Cabernet with potential to age.

Food Matching

Char-grilled Scotch Fillet with sage butter and roasted root vegetables.

Winery Profile

Plantagenet takes its name not only from its home, but also from its heritage. In 1968 in a stroke of serendipity English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenet's, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire.

He first planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Riesling three years later.

The first wines from these young vines were tight and lean and showed the elegant spice and fruit characters for which this area was to become known.
