Wine Summary Image

This Rosé was made from estate grown Shiraz and Pinot Noir grapes.

The fruit was whole bunch pressed and fermentation commenced spontaneously with ambient yeasts in a mix of old French oak barriques, large-format foudre and concrete tank. Once dry, the wine was left sur lie for several months prior to bottling.

Expert Reviews

Rating 93 points Gary Walsh WineFront November 2017

A bit of funk and struck match, rosehip tea, just-ripe strawberries dusted with spice. Savoury, almost white peppery in flavour and texture, a light tang and an earthy finish of good length. Character and a little bit extra, as per usual.

Winery Tasting Notes

The salmon orange colour of the 2017 Salasso Rose indicates the style of wine to follow – Notes of strawberry, musk and pink florals that are complimented by cardamom spice and orange peel. The cooler season has delivered a palate with cranberry-like acidity and a slight creaminess from the barrel ageing. More citrus on the palate that leads to a dry, spice laden finish.

Winery Profile

The Port Phillip Estate winery, James Halliday's 2012 Winery of the Year, is situated at Red Hill in the heart of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. Owned by the Gjergja family, winemaking is overseen by winemaker, Sandro Mosele.

Surrounded by mounds of native grasses and indigenous spotted gums, the new Port Phillip Estate winery, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, emerges from the landscape as a dramatic curved sculpture made of rammed-earth. Inside, a large cellar door and tasting room, and a light-filled restaurant open out on to an expansive outdoor deck. Underneath, state-of-the-art winemaking facilities - a barrel room, bottling line, wine processing plant, cellaring and offices - share space with six luxury accommodation suites, complete with private decks. Views across the vines to the sea are panoramic.
