“Classic St Henri. Classic year. i.e. drink now, or in half a century.”

“Comparison? 1996 immediately comes to mind; What did the legendary 1971 St Henri release look like as a four year-old!”

Expert Reviews

Rating 100, Andrew Caillard MW

The finest vintage under this label since it was first released during the 1950s. With a history interlinked with the story of Grange, 2010 St Henri stands as the triumph of this years Penfolds luxury release. The wine is amazingly expressive with deep colour, superb fruit complexity, voluminous richness and supple textures. Dark chocolate, dark cherry, blackberry, mocha, roasted chestnut aromas are followed by a richly concentrated palate full of dark chocolate, paneforte flavours, generous sweet fruit notes and ripe loose-knit chocolaty tannins. It finishes graphite firm, long, and minerally. A gorgeous wine with all the hallmarks of long term ageing potential.

Winery Tasting Notes

Vineyard Region: Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Wrattonbully, Clare Valley.

Colour

Purple rim, black core.

Aroma

Blackness prevails… black pudding, black shoe polish (and tanned leather), black liquorice, black olive, black jelly-beans? Scents of liqueured cherry, saturated dark plum, beetroot and a cooling humbug peppermint impression.

From beneath, a waft of dark paste – quince/mocha/praline/coffee grind… ristretto (double!)

Palate

How much space do we have ? A complex/kaleidoscope flavour mosaic presides.

These flavours appear turbo-charged – liqueured fruits, elderberry, wild raspberry, pomegranate, praline, almond. Full-bodied – rich, dark and concentrated, and yet still chewy, fresh and youthful

– potently geared/tuned.

Excellent length – driven by waves of intense fruits, a well of unbridled fine tannins, and a wash of awakening acidity.

Peak Drinking

Now – 2055.

Maturation Notes:

12 months in large oak vats.

Vintage Notes

A consistent theme across South Australia was the healthy and above-average winter rainfall. This not only fuelled strong canopy framework but resulted in welcomed soil water reserves, safeguarding vines across the months that followed. Unswerving from the trend of the 2000s was an earlier budburst, flowering and harvest across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the south east. Whilst not without challenges from September hail and strong spring winds, Shiraz experienced relatively even set. A November hot spell and replenishing rain pushed the vines ahead in maturity. December temperatures were cooler than November, offering vines ideal growing conditions through to veraison in early January. Mild and dry ripening conditions were complimented by cool nights, with healthy vines yielding fruit that exhibited optimum flavour, and colour development, varietal typicity and vibrancy.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Rating 97+ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (US), Issue #211

"Very deep purple-black in color and showing an attractive nose of warm blackcurrants, blueberries and licorice with a complex undercurrent of mocha, cedar, menthol and grilled meat, the full-bodied 2010 St Henri Shiraz is relatively rich in the mouth, offering tons of fruit structured by firm, fine tannins and refreshing acid. It finishes with great persistence."

Rating 97 - TS - Published on 27 Jul 2014, Australian Wine Companion

Arguably the most anticipated Penfolds release of '14, this is a standout St Henri of the modern era. The gentle touch of maturation in large, old vats propels the purity and definition of a benchmark vintage. It's elegant and effortless, framing impeccable fruit in finely honed tannins; a shiraz of space, grace, and enduring longevity.

Rating 94 - Huon Hooke

Also Ranked 19 of 116 2010 Shiraz tasted from Barossa Valley

Deep, dark, dense red/purple colour. The nose is not minty but dense and earthy, black-fruited, some raspberry notes, very much a fruit-driven wine, but not grapy or fruity in that overt sense. It has some sapidity. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with ample tannins and density. A very good St Henri.

Rating 96 - Campbell Mattinson, Winefront

St Henri is the one Penfolds super premium we all should be following. This 2010 release is the best since the 2004. In short, its gorgeous. Im tempted to use the words Beg, Borrow or Steal. Nose, palate, tannin, finish; all are in full, healthy voice. Licorice, leather, plum, clove. Fine-grained tannin. Juicy orange-peel notes. Well stored, under screwcap, it will live for just about ever.
