The Central Otago High Country of New Zealand is over-run with rabbits. Sheep and rabbits coexisted on the land for some time but the sheep couldn't keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits. In the end they were hopelessly outnumbered and driven off the land- they were last seen heading north. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch - Mr. MacGregor, tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population by selling rabbit pies. Eventually he decided to plant some vines and make a decent Pinot Noir to go with all the rabbit pie he was eating.

Winery Tasting Notes

"A bright-eyed red with hints of briar patch and a whiff of gun smoke"

The wine is made in a fruit forward, easy drinking style. Lightly oaked and gently handled to display the lively fruit flavours and fine structure of Central Otago Pinot Noir.

This 2016 Rabbit Ranch is a classic Central Otago Pinot Noir, vibrant and fruity with a soft tail.

Lots of pleasing aromas of Noir with crisp red cherry and cranberry then a light floral layer and moderate oak

aromas of spice and wood. Crisp, dry, refreshing and crunchy with flavours of bright light red fruits, firm youthful

acidity and fine easy tannin structure. Balanced if not a touch warm.

The original owner of the Rabbit Ranch – Mr McGregor  tried a number of measures to rid the land of the rabbits at the turn of the century, but was unsuccessful. In the end he decided to plant some vines and make wine.

The vineyard fell into decline after the second world war until direct descendants of Mr McGregor – Warren and Betty McGregor decided to replant the vineyard and as they say – the rest is history...

Rabbits still run wild on the vineyard and fuelled by high altitude Pinot grapes, some are reputed to be the size of ponies – but that could be another tall story...
