Expert Reviews

Rated 95 points, Bob Campbell MW - The Real Review

The 2017 Rockburn Pinot Noir maintains the high standard achieved over many vintages with this label, although it no doubt benefited from excellent ripening condition in 2017. A richly textural pinot noir with ripe plum, dark cherry, coffee, liquorice and sweet oak flavours. A generously-proportioned wine with layers of subtle flavours leading to a lengthy finish. Very impressive. Drink: 2019 to 2024

Rated 95 points, Sam Kim - Wine Orbit

Wonderfully fruited and perfumed, the gorgeously expressed bouquet shows dark cherry, raspberry, game, thyme and roasted almond characters with nuances of mushroom and spice. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, displaying elegance as well as richness, backed by seamLessly woven fine tannins. Splendidly composed and harmonious, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2022

Rated 94 points, Raymond Chan

The palate has a finely concentrated and elegant core of ripe black and dark-red berry fruit entwined with soft notes of dark herbs and whole bunch stalk nuances, along with violet and dark red floral lift. This is a finely concentrated Pinot Noir with ripe dark-red and black fruit and a subtle layering of herbs and whole bunch elements, with a refined structure and fresh acidity.

Rockburn takes its name from the rugged, rock-strewn, burn-scarred landscape of Central Otago. The region is renowned for its stunning scenery of rugged mountains and picturesque lakes.

We produce premium wines of intense varietal characteristics in Central Otago, the world’s most southerly grape-growing region. Central Otago, at 45º south, has a climate similar to Burgundy, France, the great Pinot Noir producing region of the world.

All our wines exhibit strong varietal characteristics, highlighted in the white varieties by crisp acids, which are typical of the region. It has also become apparent that like Burgundy there are distinct ‘appellations’ within Central Otago. One has only to taste a Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir to experience its perfumed nose, typically violets, and earthy, forest floor sensations on the palate.

Compare this with a Lowburn/Bannockburn Pinot Noir with its darker colour and fuller, sweeter fruit. For this reason, to fully exploit the potential of the region, it is a distinct advantage to have vineyards in different ‘appellations’.
