Wine Summary Image

Good soaking rains during winter and early spring provided ample soil moisture for the start of the growing season. Spring was relatively cool with below average temperatures for the months of October and November.

A heavy downpour of rain during flowering led to reduced berry number per bunch in the Grenache particularly, leading to lower yields but intense flavours. However, the rain and cool weather was short lived, with a return to below average rain from October to February and above average temperatures in December through to March. The prolonged warmer temperatures resulted in a significantly slower veraison this season, but the vines coped well under the conditions and welcomed some cooler weather late in the ripening period. Berry sizes were smaller across the vineyard and show promising fruit concentration. As always, the vineyard was entirely hand picked with each parcel of fruit carefully selected.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2014 vintage has wonderful balance and intensity of flavour, it has great appeal now but will last the distance. Bright dark berry fruit and lifted spice dominate the aromas, with underlying scents of pepper and subtle French oak. The palate is plush and silky, loaded with dark fruited shiraz intensity. Fine structure and excellent concentration.

Winery Profile

Yabby Lake is a dynamic Australian wine producer intent on crafting wines with a genuine sense of identity. We own vineyards in three distinct regions of Victoria, producing single vineyard wines under the Yabby Lake and Heathcote Estate labels. Red Claw and Cooralook are regional expressions of Mornington Peninsula, Heathcote and the Strathbogie Ranges.

Founded by the Kirby family, the Yabby Lake business is now headed up by Chief Winemaker and General Manager Tom Carson with a dedicated team of the industry's most experienced wine professionals working to deliver the Kirby family vision.

The first chapter of this exciting Australian wine story started in 1992 when the Kirby family planted its first vineyard at Red Hill on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Intimately involved in the Mornington Peninsula region for decades, it was only natural that founders Robert and Mem Kirby would plant their first vines in the area.

In 1998, after much searching and careful planning, the Yabby Lake Vineyard was established in the sub-region of Moorooduc.

One year later, a rare and special parcel of land on the ancient Cambrian soils of Heathcote was planted with the sole objective to grow and craft one wine - a single vineyard shiraz.

Around the same time, the family also purchased the original Mount Helen Vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges.

The Kirby family began working with viticulturist Keith Harris and soon engaged Larry McKenna to oversee the early vintages. Renowned Mornington Peninsula winemaker Tod Dexter was employed in 2004, applying his specialist knowledge of the region.

In 2008, after a decade of careful planning of the family's wine interests, Robert and Mem handed control of the family's vineyards and established labels to their children Nina and Clark.
