Wine Summary Image

The Kinnear was the ship which brought Johann Stein to Australia on 23rd April, 1838, so it is appropriate that this be the name of our flagship wine.

The Kinnear is an icon of our family, a symbol of the great hardship and struggle of the past, and a celebration of our lives today.

2014 was an excellent vintage, and the perfect opportunity to start a flagship red. Beautiful winter rain, set us up with excellent vineyard balance. We had a great vintage, with warm conditions allowing perfect ripening across all varieties.

Only 1838 bottles were produced in 2014

Expert Reviews

97 -Huon Hooke – Dec 2016 "The colour is very deep and bright and youthful; the bouquet gloriously complex with smoky, spicy dark berry and cherry aromas, while the wine is not overly big on the palate but has a real touch of elegance. It’s not a blockbuster. The tannins and acidity have been beautifully managed and the wine is seamless and delicious. An outstanding development in Mudgee shiraz.”

94- Halliday Wine Companion 2018" …a wine far lighter on its feet than regional expectations would suggest. Red and black currant, satsuma plum, Asian five-spice, liquorice and cinnamon are all present. The palate is full, but at this stage tightly bound to a phalanx of well massaged, vanilla-soaked tannins. All augurs well for a long future.”

95 - Wine Reviewer, 2018 I only came across the wines of Robert Stein a few years ago, and in my mind they are one of the best kept secrets of Australian wine. The quality they are producing across their range is exceptional and they are flying the flag for Mudgee… The wine showcases quality fruit and oak, with the impact of new and one year old French and American oak giving a heady, charred array of aromatics that meld with dark plum and briar on the nose. The palate is framed by silky, yet impactful tannins that have a vanillin edge, in terms of fruit dark plum enjoys a touch of undergrowth and spice before the finish ripples with a layered mix of dark fruits, olive and smokey oak. An impactful wine now that will grow in stature with time.”

95 - The Courier Mail, Mike Frost, Nov 2018 This Mudgee shiraz with a touch of cabernet sauvignon was selected from the best fruit and from the winery’s best block and vines. There’s rich blackberry fruit on the nose with long, fine tannins on the finish. Enjoy over the next decade with roast rib fillet on the bone.”

94 - QWINE, May 2018 … earthy, smokey and savoury characters are the hero flanked stewed plum and dried dark berry fruit seemingly taking a back seat. The fruit steps up and plays more of a part in later days. Power without punch, the fruit is undoubtedly generous too. Black pepper spice and chalky tannins close up shop. Once in form, there’s a rhythm to this wine which is hard to ignore. It’s best drinking ahead of it, but for now, it seems in need of more rest. Give it that, but if you must drink now, decant hours before drinking.”

94 - ” The Vinsomniac, 2018 Smells dense and dark, a whiff of pan juices – dark and sticky. It’s an experience, on aroma alone. You sense the initial introduction will be intense. Lithe, silken on entry – then it hits. It’s a liquid slap, one that reverberates across the palate sending waves of flavour. Tannin, fine-grained, many a suggestion of spice through it. There’s nary a suggestion of fruit, shrouded and crowded as it is by the spice and oak. An experience, sullen for now – its best is ahead of it, for 24 hours later it started to sing.

“93/100… A Mudgee standout…” Oz Wine Review, Andrew Graeme

Winery Tasting Notes

The hand-picked fruit was fermented in small open fermenters, and hand plunged several times daily. Matured in 50% new and one year old French Oak Hogsheads, and only the best barrels were included in the Kinnear blend, which consists of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting wine displays a strong bouquet of blackberry and earth, with a soft but pronounced tannin structure. This wine has been minimally fined and filtered and we recommend decanting before serving.
