Wine Summary Image

As fun and giggly as those sweet numbers are, it’s not within the Teusner DNA to make one…nor in fact to drink one. We want our rosé to be more like our reds…dry! We use the real classic Barossa red grapes – Grenache, Mataro and Carignane. We get the very real Riebke boys to grow them in their very real…and appropriately very dry…ancient Barossa soils. We make the wine in old oak barrels (also real)…anything we can do give the wine some savoury spice…some mongrel!

Winery Tasting Notes

What’s all this about?

When it comes to lathering our bbq’d Linke’s bangers or flooding the tops of our Tanunda Bakery pies in the red stuff, we at Teusner take a big detour around the sweet sugary mass market stuff and go straight for the real gear. Home made with tomatoes and all the secret herbs and spices of a long lost but never forgotten recipe. (And if it hadn’t been for the Germans pipping the Spanish in the race to settle the Barossa, we’d be

calling it ‘salsa’ and not ‘sauce’!)

The same goes with rosé….or #brosé in Instagram world . The Teusner DNA demands we make ‘em the way we want to drink ‘em…and that means spicy, sexy and dry! No wonder we call this stuff Salsa!

39% Grenache, 36% Mataro and 25% Montepulciano.

What does it smell like?

Fresh light berried red fruits….strawberries and raspberries… with intriguing spice including star anise and cardomom.

What does it taste like?

Vibrant ripe light red fruits flow across the palate held in check by balanced acidity and kept long and dry with chalky fine phenolics

When will it give me pleasure?

Serve chilled with a decent chop cut of Schu-Am Barossa pork

Winery Profile

Teusner Wines came into being late in 2001 when Kym Teusner witnessed a conversation between his girlfriend’s uncle and his brother. They were discussing the viability of an old Grenache vineyard, planted in the Northern Barossa Valley by their grandfather. The low yields and low prices being paid by the ‘Big Boys’ meant that the vineyard was running at a loss and was facing certain destruction! Kym was loath to hear this and approached his brother in law, now business partner, to see if they could scratch together enough cash to keep these gnarled old vines in the ground. In that first year they raised enough capital for only about a quarter of the fruit from that vineyard, but this was enough for the Riebke brothers to stall their plans for these precious old vines. They were aware of a few other old blocks that fruit could be sourced from, if required, and made the first release with 165 cases of 2002 Joshua. In addition to this about 8 hogsheads of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz was put aside, destined to be released around 24 months later as Avatar.

Our philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit that we source from old, well maintained vineyards. These vineyards reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which we guide, with minimal inputs, into wine. Our fruit sources are predominantly family and close friends, which allows us this selectivity in which fruit we vinify.
