Expert Reviews

Glowing yellow-green; has transformed from nymph to bright dragonfly, given 87 points on release in '04; it borders on nitpicking to suggest the abnormally low alcohol causes the palate to thin out on the finish. Rating 93 - Drink by 2019 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUL/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma/Palate

A museum release of a most classic Hunter semillon, still displaying lifted lemon citrus aromas with an elegant balance of acid and fruit sweetness.

Wonderfully complex honey characters are beginning to develop with 7 years of ageing.

At only 9% alcohol, this is the sort of Hunter semillon one reads about but seldom sees and rarely gets to taste! Not many cases are left, so make sure to taste a wine that demonstrates Hunter semillon as the wine texts rave about.

Winery Profile

The Three Ponds wines are made to showcase Hunter Valley fruit and winemaking at its best. Owned by the Iannuzzi and Tsironis families, Three Ponds combines European and modern Australian traditions of winemaking and viticulture. The name Three Ponds originates from Theodore Iannuzzi, who at age three referred to the three dams on our Broke vineyard as ponds. Theodore was obviously inspired by the ducks, lilies, reeds and dragonflies that he observed at the time. Thanks to Theodore, we named the Broke Vineyard and our premium range of wines Three Ponds. The Three Ponds vineyard lies on the sandy loam river flats of Monkey Place Creek, and was planted in 1970 by Neil Grosser. Along with his son David, Neil still carefully manages today, 40 years later! The Three Ponds Vineyard is planted to semillon, chardonnay, Verdelho, chambourcin, as well as some experimental varietals. Mount Eyre Vineyards’ second property, the Holman Estate, Pokolbin, represents a most exceptional site, and it is from Holman Estate that the Three Ponds premium reds are drawn. In the heart of the Hunter Valley, Holman Estate has deep red loams that have proven their worth and been shown by history to be the backbone of many great Hunter Valley red wines. At Holman Estate, we have shiraz, merlot and viognier, as well as some Italian varietals still in very small quantities. In excellent and exceptional years, Three Ponds produces small quantities of the Heirloom and Holman series of wines, for lovers of super-premium Hunter wines.
