Expert Reviews

Spain’s flagship red variety is going gangbusters in pockets of Australia suited to its early-ripening traits. This spicy, silky and plush version hails from Victoria’s Heathcote region where winemaker Narelle King used her considerable understanding of the variety to achieve a stunning flavour definition. From The Vine Sydney Sunday Telegraph, 3 February, 2019

Given they specialise in Mediterranean varieties, it's no wonder Tar & Roses have won so many awards, including Top Gold and two Trophies at the 2017 Victorian Wine Show. Strikingly dense red in appearance, it's an inky powerhouse of black cherry, cola, anise and liquorice. It has a deluxe palate with super-ripe, inky black fruits delivering velvety power and immense tannin depth. An iron fist in a velvet glove. 50 Best Wines of 2018 Matt White, Selector Magazine, Jan/Feb 2019

Medium weight wine but it feels warm, generous and grunty. Tannin is the key here. The wine opens with cherry-plum and cola flavours, adds spice and prune to the mix, and then drives herb-flecked tannin through the back half. There’s warmth, sure, but there’s lots to chew on. 91 Points Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front, 30 November 2018

A brilliant testament to co-founder of the Tar & Roses label, Don Lewis, who died during vintage last year. Lewis was a big fan of tempranillo, and his winemaking partner Narelle King has produced a great example of the grape: succulent black fruit framed by firm, long, tongue-hugging, lamb-friendly tannins. It’s amazing value at this price which makes it appropriately accessible: Don had a famously laconic, down-to-earth approach to wine and life. Max Allen - Australian Financial Review, 30 November 2018

Winery Profile

The extensive experience and winemaking knowledge of Don Lewis combined with Narelle King's broad thinking and diverse skill set, brought partnership strength to Tar & Roses. For the past three years, Don and Narelle have been making wine in Priorat, Spain, fuelling their intrigue in the classic European varietals, particularly Nebbiolo.

Their interests were not confined to the varietals or wine styles solely in traditional European regions, but how these varieties could be grown and made in Australia.

Back in Australia, Don and Narelle have concentrated on producing wines from these European varietals in their own region - Central Victoria. Here, they make Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese in addition to a Central Victorian Shiraz, one of Don's signature varieties.

Tar & Roses encapsulates the complexity and interest of this story. One that shows the friendship between Don and Narelle, and the multi-regions of Italy, Spain and Australia. It is a brand that speaks of the traditions of wine merging with the cutting edge of Australian winemaking, bridging the old world with the new.
