Vinification

The grenache fruit is picked for a balance of sweet fruit flavour and freshness. Grapes are crushed, destemmed and chilled on route to the airbag press. Free run juice and pressings juices are kept separate, a final cut being made before the extraction of coarse tannin from the red berry skins. After cold settling for several days, the juices are racked off solids and fermented at relatively cool temperatures to protect the delicate fruits and floral varietal aromas. Once ferments are dry and settled, the wine is blended, stabilised and fined before filtration and bottling.

Mrs Wigley was not the wife of Wirra Wirra founder Robert Strangways Wigley, but a particular pussycat who was born at the neighbouring Petrucci residence. Within days her mum had dragged the litter to settle in our open fermenters, and from then on Mrs Wigley became a permanent feature of the cellars.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Delicate pink with sunset highlights.

Bouquet

Raspberry sorbet and orange zest along with musk stick, floral notes and a hint of dried herbs.

Palate

Leads with tempting juicy red fruits - think strawberry compote and ripe, juicy Raspberries. There is a tropical fruit richness, sweet spices and a touch of Turkish Delight. Finishes refreshingly with steely red fruit acidity, as of cranberry juice.

Drink

Enjoy while young, on release and over the next 18 months. Serve chilled.

Food Match

Versatile, this wine will accompany a wide range of dishes including barbequed chicken, grilled salmon, soft cheeses and charcuterie, to name a few. The perfect summer sip.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Wirra Wirra is situated 37 km south of Adelaide in South Australia's famous McLaren Vale wine region. It is an historic site, which was originally built in 1894 and which by 1903 was producing a substantial quantity of wine that was primarily exported to the rest of the British Empire.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". It was established by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and well known eccentric. Following his death in 1924 the vineyards were sold by his family and the cellars fell into disuse. It remained that way until 1969 when the site was bought from Vern Sparrow, son of Wigley's foreman Jack Sparrow, by cousins Greg and Roger Trott.

Assisted by Roger and armed with a few old photos and sketches, Greg re-built the derelict Wirra Wirra winery from two remaining walls and some slate fermenting tanks, transforming it into the handsome winery it is today. Trott did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun."

After a long illness, Trott passed away in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra. The winery has built a reputation for its classic McLaren Vale reds and elegant Adelaide Hills whites and has been described by James Halliday as “the best small to medium producer in McLaren vale and up there among the nation’s finest.”

Visitors to the historic ironstone cellars at Wirra Wirra will get a touch of Greg Trott's philosophy which is built around the celebration of life: great food, stimulating conversation, marvellous music, and of course a fine bottle of wine. From the massive post and rail fence, known as “Woodhenge” to the giant Angelus bell that sits atop the winery, Wirra Wirra has discoveries that have helped make it a must-visit destination in the McLaren Vale wine region.
