65% Cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 5% each cabernet franc and malbec, matured for 14 months in French and American oak (10% new). One of relatively few cabernet merlot blends in Coonawarra, and makes you wonder why there aren't more. If there are green or minty notes, I can't see them, instead there are supple, sweet cassis, redcurrant and dried herb flavours supported by fine, ripe tannins and French oak.

Winery Tasting Notes

The Cluny was made from fruit which was harvested at its optimum maturity. The wine was fermented for 7 days under controlled temperatures in a combination of rotary and static fermenters. Maturation for 14 months in small French and American oak barrels has assisted in the development of a wine that shows vibrancy and richness. Medium bodied, with complexity and depth derived from the blending of four grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. A perfumed nose with lifted notes of sarsaparilla, liquorice and dried herb. Sweet dark fruit flavours of juicy plum and blackcurrant are supported by gentle tannins and well-integrated oak. A perfectly balanced wine with an elegant finish.

Zema is one of the last outposts of hand-pruning in Coonawarra, with members of the Zema family tending the vineyard set in the heart of Coonawarra's terra rossa soil. Winemaking practices are straightforward; if ever there was an example of great wines being made in the vineyard, this is it. Exports to the UK, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and China.
